The Daily Press is reporting a major vehicle accident in Hampton yesterday, which unfortunately involved multiple injuries from an accident at very high speeds. The accident involved four vehicles, some of which overturned, and some individuals were transported to a local hospital, but thankfully are expected to survive. This accident is a stark reminder of the dangers of high-speed crashes on our local roadways in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, and Newport News. The roads in our area are crowded, and notorious for narrow bridges and tunnels, which all increases the risk of car accidents. If you add one driver moving significantly faster than the speed limit, it is a recipe for disaster.
What To Do When You’re In A Speed-Related Car Accident
Always remember to drive at a speed that is safe for conditions, and under the speed limit. Never use your mobile phone while driving, and always wear your seatbelt. But even if you do everything right, you can still find yourself at the mercy of another driver who isn’t driving as responsibly as you. It’s important to do everything you can to be safe, but in the unfortunate event you have an injury, remember these tips:
- Take care of yourself and others. Call emergency services or ask someone to do so. If you are hurt, let the ambulance transport you to the hospital to get checked out. Waiting isn’t worth the risk. Just go.
- Once things have stabilized, police will ask for your identification and insurance information, be sure to provide it. But don’t make any statements about who is or is not at fault in the accident. Just tell the officer exactly what you remember. And if there is something you don’t remember, just say so.
- The other driver’s insurance company may call and ask you for a recorded statement by phone. You should simply decline to do this right now — just say, “No thank-you, I’m not going to give any statements at this time. Have a nice day!”
- That company may also offer you a quick settlement for your injuries. Don’t accept it. You don’t know the extent of your damages yet, and you need a lawyer to investigate.
