After a standard round of inspections, multiple health violations were found in numerous Hampton Roads, Virginia regional nursing homes. The inspections revealed that only two out of nearly 65 nursing homes in the area contained several health violations. An average of 10 violations were discovered in the homes with a facility in Norfolk, Virginia bearing the most with a total of more than 30. Two other homes in Chesapeake, Virginia and another in Norfolk contained around 25 each. Violations include failure to keep areas free from accident hazards, failure to implement infection prevention and control programs, and inadequate care regarding dialysis, respiratory issues, pain management, medical errors, and skin wounds. A lack of protection from all forms of abuse and neglect as well as a lack of enough food and fluids for patients also appeared in the reports. Additionally, family members and physicians did not receive reports when loved ones became ill or their health declined.
Although the biggest offenders who failed to protect nursing home residents in the area corrected their deficiencies as evidenced in the follow-up inspections, nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities should provide safe and adequate care in the first place. Unfortunately, without proper staff training and hiring experienced and compassionate medical professionals, nursing home residents may be at-risk for receiving inadequate care or enduring abuse and neglect. Without proper care, residents may suffer from serious medical problems or even fatal injuries.
