A new Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) campaign that urges motorists to buckle their seatbelts launched in June. The Virginia DMV campaign called “Local Heroes Seat Belt Awareness Initiative” pairs local law enforcement departments with the DMV to promote the use of seatbelts throughout the state. It targets the southwestern portion of Virginia specifically because apparently fewer car occupants wear their seatbelts in the region. Since Virginia is a heavily traveled state due to the spate of vacationers and other visitors who travel through the state to reach other destinations, the safety campaign serves to protect residents and the many visitors who drive the roads.
According to recent studies, nearly 85 percent of Virginia residents wore their seatbelts in the past year. Unfortunately, more than 160 fatalities occurred during car accidents where individuals failed to wear their seatbelts. Wearing a seatbelt could potentially avert the possibility of sustaining serious injuries or succumbing to fatal injuries when a wreck occurs.
