Findings from AARP released Thursday note Coronavirus infection and deaths rate continue to climb among residents of nursing homes in Virginia, keeping the state among the highest in both categories. Statistics show the death rate jumped to 2.76 fatalities per 100 residents from December 21st to January 17th, nearly doubling the rate of 1.52 deaths from the prior reporting period. Infection rates climbed from 10.4 to 14.1 among residents and from 7.4 to 9.1 for staffers. While PPE shortages fell from 14.9 percent of facilities lacking a one-week supply to 12.1 percent, the issues of understaffing persist. Nearly one in five long-term care facilities struggle with staffing shortages.
These statistics come as the Virginia legislature halted two measures mandating staffing minimums for long-term care facilities. These facilities have seen 5.4 percent of total cases in the state but 45.7 percent of the deaths. With over 3,100 residents deceased due to COVID-19, AARP continues to advocate for higher staffing levels, increased pay for workers, and more oversight of nursing homes.
