Proposed Bill to Encourage Use of Cameras in Nursing Home Rooms

March 9, 2020

Nursing home abuse cases are being reported at a rapid pace, with almost 5 million people abused in nursing homes each year. Nursing homes are supposed to be places that you trust will take care of your loved ones; not put them in a dangerous position. Due to the alarming number of abuse cases, lawmakers have proposed a new bill that would create a sense of safety within nursing homes and for elders who live there. The proposed bill would allow cameras to be installed inside the rooms of nursing home patients. With this increased surveillance, lawmakers hope that abuse cases will decrease. The cameras inside the rooms will allow family members and loved ones to see how the patient is treated and if any abuse is happening. Consent would have to be given by the patient/s in the room if cameras were to be installed. Signs will also be placed both in and outside of the room warning everyone that surveillance is being used. If a private procedure is being performed inside the patient’s room, the caregiver will have the ability to close a curtain and restrict the view of the camera.

Nursing home abuse is serious and can cause the victim and their family emotional, physical and mental harm. This proposed bill would encourage a safer environment and limit the opportunity for abuse. Despite the positive outcome that could come from this new law, there are some negative opinions of the bill. The argument that many people give for the opposition of the bill are that the cameras are too invasive and can deprive the elderly of their privacy. Despite the backlash, the bill has many supporters and strives to ensure that nursing home residents are getting the proper care that they deserve.
